Car Park Resurfacing & Groundworks at Five Villages Hall, Chester

One of our most recent large-scale projects was at Five Villages Hall in Chester—a job that had been in planning for almost a year. With careful consultation and detailed planning, we worked closely with the client to ensure the final result was exactly what they needed.

The Challenge

The hall’s car park had been causing ongoing issues for visitors. The original surface material wasn’t suitable, making it difficult underfoot and inconvenient to walk on. Like many gravel or stone car parks, there were loose and uneven areas that needed to be addressed. The client wanted a long-lasting, budget-friendly solution that improved safety and usability.

Our Solution: Capping the Car Park

After extensive discussions, we agreed to cap the car park. Capping involves removing the top layer of larger, loose stones and replacing it with a fine, compactable material. For this project, we used approximately 85 tonnes of Grano dust, creating a smooth and durable surface.

To achieve the best possible finish, we utilised:

• A 5-ton excavator

• A 3-ton dumper

• A ride-on roller for proper compaction and a professional finish

This process significantly improved the overall safety, appearance, and usability of the car park.

Added Service: Installing Kerb Edgings

The client also chose an optional upgrade—installing kerb edgings around the car park. Kerbs provide a strong, clean outline while adding long-term durability to the space.

To complete this, we used a kerb lifter attachment to reduce manual handling and improve safety. Trenches were dug, a slump concrete base was laid, and everything was backfilled with concrete—using approximately 11m³ in total. The kerbs gave the car park a polished, well-defined look.

Optional Extra: Repainting Disabled Bays

Accessibility is a key consideration in any public space. As part of this project, we also repainted and installed four disabled parking bays, all laid out to regulation standards using high-quality, long-lasting paint. These markings not only improve visibility but also ensure the car park meets accessibility requirements for visitors.

The Finished Result

The end result was a safer, smarter, and more accessible car park. While stone-based car parks will always require occasional rolling and levelling over time, this upgrade has given Five Villages Hall a durable and practical surface that will serve the community for years to come.
